What should I weigh for my height? The short answer
For adults, a familiar reference is the weight interval corresponding to a BMI from 18.5 to under 25. At 170 cm (about 5 ft 7 in), this calculator gives approximately 53.5–72.0 kg (118–159 lb), using 24.9 as the upper calculation value. At 180 cm (about 5 ft 11 in), it gives 59.9–80.7 kg (132–178 lb). This is a screening reference, not a personalised goal or medical diagnosis.
Ideal weight chart by height: kilograms and pounds
Looking for an ideal weight chart by height or wondering about the reference range for 5'2", 5'5", 5'7" or 6'0"? The table below shows adult BMI reference calculations at 5 cm height intervals. Feet and inches are rounded conversions; the numbers come from the precise centimetre measurement, not the rounded imperial label.
| Height (cm / ft-in) | Weight (kg) | Weight (lb, approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| 150 cm · 4 ft 11 in | 41.6–56.0 kg | 92–124 lb |
| 155 cm · 5 ft 1 in | 44.4–59.8 kg | 98–132 lb |
| 160 cm · 5 ft 3 in | 47.4–63.7 kg | 104–141 lb |
| 165 cm · 5 ft 5 in | 50.4–67.8 kg | 111–149 lb |
| 170 cm · 5 ft 7 in | 53.5–72.0 kg | 118–159 lb |
| 175 cm · 5 ft 9 in | 56.7–76.3 kg | 125–168 lb |
| 180 cm · 5 ft 11 in | 59.9–80.7 kg | 132–178 lb |
| 185 cm · 6 ft 1 in | 63.3–85.2 kg | 140–188 lb |
| 190 cm · 6 ft 3 in | 66.8–89.9 kg | 147–198 lb |
| 195 cm · 6 ft 5 in | 70.3–94.7 kg | 155–209 lb |
| 200 cm · 6 ft 7 in | 74.0–99.6 kg | 163–220 lb |
Values use a BMI of 18.5–24.9 and are rounded for readability. The upper boundary of the standard reference category is strictly below BMI 25. For an exact height in between these rows, use the calculator above.
How do you calculate ideal weight from height?
This tool doesn't attempt to find a single perfect body weight. It rearranges the standard body mass index (BMI) formula. BMI = weight in kg ÷ height in metres squared. Therefore, to convert a BMI reference value back into weight:
- Convert your height into metres: 170 cm = 1.70 m.
- Square it: 1.70 × 1.70 = 2.89.
- Multiply by 18.5: about 53.5 kg (118 lb).
- Multiply by 24.9: about 72.0 kg (159 lb).
You do not need to enter your current weight to use this calculator. Add it only if you'd also like to see your current BMI; that value is calculated as weight divided by height squared.
Does ideal weight differ for women and men?
Searches for ideal weight for women by height and ideal weight for men by height often return different numbers. However, the standard BMI categories used here for adults aged 20 and over apply regardless of sex. This does not mean that two people of the same height have identical body composition or needs. Muscle mass, medical history and other individual factors cannot be summarised by a simple woman/man multiplier.
Does ideal weight change with age: 30, 40, 50 or 60?
A common question is whether a person's ideal weight changes at 40, 50, 60 or older. This calculator uses the same general adult BMI reference range; it does not calculate an age-specific target. Age-related changes in muscle, function or medical conditions can change how a clinician interprets a result. The tool is intended for adults aged 20 and over, not children or teens, who need age- and sex-specific growth assessments.
What about the Devine formula, Hamwi formula or other ideal-body-weight equations?
You might encounter the Devine or Hamwi formulas, or other historic equations described as ideal body weight (IBW). Some were devised for particular clinical uses and return a single number; they are not interchangeable with a general adult BMI screening interval. Estimly uses one transparent method throughout the page and labels it as a reference range, not a treatment target.
Why BMI alone cannot tell you your healthiest weight
BMI is a useful, simple screening measurement, but it does not separate body fat from muscle, show where fat is distributed, or tell you about fitness, blood pressure, symptoms or medical history. Highly muscular people may have an elevated BMI without the same body-fat profile as others with that number. A BMI within the reference interval also does not guarantee good health.
Do not use this calculator during pregnancy or for children and adolescents. If you're concerned about your weight or health, ask a qualified healthcare professional for an individual assessment rather than treating an online chart as a prescription.

Frequently asked questions about ideal weight
What is the ideal weight for 5 ft 2 in?
Five feet two inches is approximately 157.5 cm. Applying BMI 18.5–24.9 gives a mathematical reference range of roughly 45.9–61.8 kg (101–136 lb). It is not an individual recommendation.
What is the ideal weight for 5 ft 5 in?
Five feet five inches is approximately 165.1 cm. The reference interval is roughly 50.4–67.9 kg (111–150 lb), rounded. Actual medical interpretation requires more context.
What is the ideal weight for 5 ft 7 in?
Five feet seven inches is approximately 170.2 cm, with a mathematical BMI reference interval of about 53.6–72.1 kg (118–159 lb).
What is the ideal weight for 5 ft 10 in?
Five feet ten inches is approximately 177.8 cm. The BMI-based interval is approximately 58.5–78.7 kg (129–174 lb). It isn't a personalised target.
What is the ideal weight for 6 ft?
Six feet is approximately 182.9 cm. The BMI-based reference range is about 61.9–83.3 kg (136–184 lb), depending on rounding.
Can I calculate a weight range without entering my current weight?
Yes. Your height is sufficient. The optional current-weight field is used only if you want to see your BMI too.
Is there a separate BMI range for men and women?
The general adult BMI reference categories used here are the same. BMI does not capture individual differences in muscle mass or body composition.
Should I change the reference weight because I'm over 50?
This tool does not prescribe a different weight based on age. Health history, mobility and muscle mass may matter in a personalised assessment.
Is BMI 18.5–24.9 a guarantee that I'm healthy?
No. BMI is a screening metric. It does not, by itself, assess diet, cardiovascular health, activity, blood tests or body-fat distribution.
Is this chart suitable for athletes?
It may be less informative for very muscular individuals because BMI includes muscle in overall body weight.
Is this tool suitable for pregnancy or children?
No. Pregnant people and children or teenagers need different health assessments; discuss questions with a healthcare professional.
Does Estimly store my weight?
No account or weight submission is required. The values are used locally by the calculator in your browser.
Method and medical sources
The reference thresholds follow CDC adult BMI categories. The NHS BMI guidance also explains limitations and appropriate use. Estimly applies the formula directly, using 18.5 and 24.9 and rounding outputs for display. This page provides general information, not a medical diagnosis, personalised target or medically reviewed consultation.
